Quick answer: Install the free ROVE Dash Cam app from the App Store or Google Play and create your account first, while your phone is on normal internet. Then turn on the dash cam's WiFi, join the camera's network from your phone (default password 12345678, also shown on the camera screen), and open the app. You can now watch live video, download and share recordings, change settings and update firmware, all within about 10 meters (about 33 feet) of the camera.
After an accident or a close call, you want the video on your phone fast: to show the other driver, send to your insurer or share with the police. Every current ROVE dash cam (R2-4K, R2-4K DUAL, R2-4K DUAL PRO and R3) has built-in WiFi that connects straight to your phone through the free ROVE app. Here's exactly how to set it up, and how to fix the two things that trip most people up.
What the ROVE app can (and can't) do
It can:
-
Show live video from the camera on your phone.
-
Let you browse, download and share recordings, including locked event videos.
-
Change camera settings from your phone.
-
Install firmware updates over the air.
Change camera settings from your phone
It can't:
-
Watch your car remotely over the internet. The camera's WiFi is a direct link between the dash cam and your phone, like pairing a Bluetooth speaker but over WiFi. It doesn't connect to the cloud, and it doesn't give your phone internet.
-
Connect from far away. Stay within about 10 meters (33 feet) of the camera.
Before you start
-
Install the app: search "ROVE" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and install ROVE Dash Cam.
-
Create your free account first, while your phone is on home WiFi or mobile data. Don't connect to the dash cam's WiFi yet: the app needs normal internet to register you. You only do this once.
-
Allow location access when the app asks. The app uses it to find and auto-connect to nearby ROVE dash cams.
-
Make sure a memory card is in the camera and the camera is powered on.
Step-by-step: connect your phone to a ROVE dash cam

-
Turn on the camera's WiFi (see the table below for your model).
-
Open the ROVE app and tap "Connect to ROVE Dash Cam WiFi", or go to your phone's Settings > WiFi.
-
Join the camera's network. It starts with "ROVE" and the model name (see the table below).
-
Enter the password. The default is 12345678, and it's also shown on the camera's screen.
-
Go back to the ROVE app. If you've added this camera before, select it and tap PROCEED. If not, tap Add New Device and follow the on-screen steps.
-
You should now see the live video. You're connected.
Live Video screen: tap Retry Connect to Dash Cam if it doesn't connect on its own
Connected: the app shows your camera, firmware version and storage
How to turn on WiFi on each ROVE model
| ROVE model | Turn WiFi on | Network name starts with | WiFi band | Download speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ROVE R2-4K | Press and hold the Emergency Lock button for 2 seconds, or System Settings > WiFi | ROVE_R2-4K_ | WiFi 6, 2.4GHz | Not stated in the manual |
| ROVE R2-4K DUAL | Press and hold the Emergency Lock button for 2 seconds, or System Settings > WiFi | ROVE_R2-4K-DUAL_ | Dual-band 5GHz & 2.4GHz | Up to 20MB/s |
| ROVE R2-4K DUAL PRO | Press and hold the Emergency Lock button for 2 seconds, or System Settings > WiFi | ROVE_R2-4K-DUAL_PRO | WiFi 6, dual-band 5GHz & 2.4GHz | Up to 30MB/s over 5GHz |
| ROVE R3 Dash cam | Tap the screen > Settings > System Settings > tap the WiFi icon (a solid red light means WiFi is on) | ROVE_R3_ or Rove_R3_ | Dual-band 5GHz & 2.4GHz | Up to 30MB/s over 5GHz |
On a phone, swipe the table sideways to see all columns.
Tip: a short press of the Emergency Lock button locks the current video; a 2-second press turns WiFi on or off. On the R3, use the WiFi icon on the touchscreen.
"No Internet" message? That's normal
Because the camera doesn't provide internet access, your phone will warn you. Here's what to tap so it stays connected:
-
iPhone: you may see "No Internet Connection" or "does not appear to be connected to the Internet". Tap Keep Trying Wi-Fi. Don't let it disconnect, or you'll have to forget the ROVE network and join again. A blue check mark next to the ROVE network means you're connected.
-
Android: you'll see "No Internet". Wait 10 to 15 seconds for the pop-up, then tap Always connect, or tick Don't ask again for this network and tap YES.
Can't see the ROVE network?
-
R2-4K DUAL, R2-4K DUAL PRO and R3: some phones don't show 5GHz networks. In the dash cam's System Settings, change WiFi Mode from 5GHz to 2.4GHz, then look again. Downloads are slower on 2.4GHz, so switch back to 5GHz if your phone supports it.
-
R2-4K: it only uses 2.4GHz, so there's nothing to switch. Check WiFi is turned on and you're within 10 meters.
-
All models: turn your phone's WiFi off and on, move closer to the camera, and make sure you're not still connected to your home WiFi.
How to save and share a video after an incident
-
Lock the video first. Press the Emergency Lock button once (R2-4K, R2-4K DUAL, R2-4K DUAL PRO) or tap the lock icon (R3). A hard bump locks the video automatically. Locked videos aren't overwritten by loop recording.
-
Connect your phone to the camera's WiFi and open the ROVE app.
-
Find the video in the app's list of recordings. Locked videos are kept in the event files.
-
Download it to your phone.
-
Share it with your insurer, the police, or Uber and Lyft support, straight from your phone.
Filter by Events to find locked videos fast
Download the video to your phone
Tip: for the fastest downloads, connect your phone directly to the dash cam's WiFi in your phone's WiFi settings. The app shows this can make downloads about 2× faster. On the R2-4K DUAL, R2-4K DUAL PRO and R3, 5GHz WiFi is much faster for large 4K or 3-channel files. Stay close to the camera while downloading.
How to update your dash cam's firmware
Firmware updates fix bugs and add features. All ROVE dash cams update OTA (over the air) updates through the app:
-
Connect your phone to the dash cam's WiFi and open the ROVE app.
-
Tap Firmware Update in the app's left menu, while staying connected to the camera.
-
Follow the on-screen steps. Keep the camera powered on until the update finishes.
If an update won't install, contact ROVE customer care.
How to move videos to a computer instead
-
R2-4K, R2-4K DUAL and R3: connect the camera to your PC or Mac with the included USB-C data cable and choose Connect as a Flash Drive (or "Connect as USB Flash Drive"). Or turn the camera off, take out the memory card and put it in a card reader.
-
R2-4K DUAL PRO: it can't connect to a computer directly. Turn the camera off, take out the memory card and use a card reader, or download over WiFi with the app.
-
Playing videos: ROVE recommends the free VLC Media Player (videolan.org).
Always turn the camera off before you remove or insert the memory card.
